History

Allen, Nebraska was founded in the 1890s as a Pacific Railroad townsite, on land formerly owned by Henry Allen. Originally the settlement supported the surrounding farming population. Today, it largely supports a population of commuters. Though far from just being a bedroom community, Allen provides ample opportunities for its residents to become involved in small town life. We are proud of our K-12 school, our churches, small businesses and organizations.

Housing

The Allen Development Group, Inc., a group of forward-thinking volunteers working to promote housing and business in Allen, has created outstanding housing opportunities for families with modest incomes who are looking for homes in good neighborhoods. Local contractors have built spec homes. Our hometown bank has provided a variety of loan programs to help finance homes. With its combination of reasonably priced homes and lots, Allen attracts young families as well as retirees. In addition to family homes, our Summit Hill Housing complex provides apartments for elderly, low-income and handicapped individuals. We have already welcomed several families seeking a quieter, safer way of life, clean air and water. Our Village Estates housing development has room to grow.

Employment

Anyone looking for employment opportunities can find them within commuting distance of Allen. Several large employers are located only thirty minutes away in Sioux City, Iowa. Nationally known businesses such as Gateway 2000 and Iowa Beef Processors have their corporate offices in the Sioux City area. Allen also seems especially well-suited for those people looking to start their own regional service businesses. Allen is already the home of a plumber, electrician, and several construction companies which serve the surrounding towns and villages as well as Allen. Office space for small businesses is available on Allen's main street, where a beauty shop is located. There is also room for more businesses in the Allen Mini-Mall.
