Since the Development Group's purchase of two tracts of land on the east edge of the village in June 1995, 12 lots have been sold. Twenty-five lots have been developed, nine homes completed and one spec house being built now. Northeast Nebraska Housing Initiative as built a duplex Townhouse on Eagle Avenue, with each unit featuring two bedrooms, an oversize single garage, all new appliances, first floor laundry area, full walk-out basement, front porch and back deck overlooking a lake.  The two units are for sale to anyone 65 or older, meeting the income limits.  Call Linda Kastning at 402-635-2078.

Allen continues to grow outside the sub division also. Homes are being built, older homes remodeled and contractors have been kept busy. One major project is that the city has completed hard surfacing the newest street - Eagle Avenue.

As the town grows, one of the Development Group's first projects, Allen Day Care, is proving that the center is indeed meeting the needs of the community.  It is a modern fact of life that young families with two working parents need childcare.  Allen has met that need in a special way by providing a home-away-from-home site, which is licensed for 12 children.  Tricia Bathke, who manages the site, says that the Allen Day Care becomes a second family for the children under her care.  The Allen Day Care closed its second site since several other providers have started daycare in their homes.  Allen Daycare moved into a new location at 124 W 4th Street.  A Heritage Home was purchased from the Wayne School.

Census results show that Allen has grown from 331 residents to 411 residents - an increase of 24%. The Northeast Housing Initiative Inc. completed a site specific housing market study for Allen. Results showed that the average age was 42.5 in 1990. The average age in 2001 is 38.9. As a community we are getting younger!
